The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the galaxy is wholly remarkable book. Perhaps the most remarkable certainly the most successful book, ever to come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor. More popular than The Celestial Homecare Omnibus, better selling than 53 More Things to Do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid’s trilogy of philosophical blockbusters, Where God Went Wrong, Some more of God’s Greatest Mistakes, and Who is This God person Anyway? It’s already supplanted the Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom for two imporant reasons. Fist, it’s slightly cheaper, and second, it has the words “Don’t Panic” printed in large, friendly letters on its cover.

“Space,” says the introduction to The Hitchhiker’s Guide, “is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is”. And so on. It also says that if you hold a lungful of air, you can survive in the total vacuum of space for about 30 seconds. But with space being really big and all, the chances of being picked up within that time are two to the power of two billion, 79 million, 460 thousand, 347 to one against.

I’m in a bit of a Jane Austen mood this week. What can I say; in spite of the feminist in me (who knows that I should not be supportive to any novel where a woman’s problems are solved with marriage) - I love her writing, and I can’t help but fall in love with really old-fashioned English prose!

So, be prepared for much reblogging/scrapbooking of all things Austen-ey. Who knows; it may just get me through my psychology revision.

Sometimes, I think my brain is a little like a sofa.

I have all these great ideas and words and phrases hanging about there, tucked under the pillows and shoved down the dark space at the back, wedged in between the cushions. All these ideas, all these lovely things I know I could use, and I can’t reach ‘em.

Sometimes I probably don’t even know they’re still there.
